Using essential oils can have a lot of benefits not just for humans, but also for animals. These oils can be used to prevent infections, as a sedative, to calm anxiety, to boost the immune system and as an expectorant. However, it should be noted that none of these oils are safe for cats. Some of the benefits of using essential oils for pets are as follows.

  • Calms pets before travel: Studies have found that one of the benefits of using essential oils for pets, especially lavender oil, is that it can help to calm dogs before travel. It was found that aromatherapy using lavender oil is easy and hassle-free compared to traditional treatments, which could be expensive or have adverse effects.
  • Useful for joint injuries and pain:  Quite a few essential oils can be used to treat pain and injuries in dogs. Some vets use frankincense oil or a blend of lemongrass and sweet almond oil to do light massages on the injured joints of pets. This can help to relieve pain and provide relief.
  • Boosts immune health:  One of the vital benefits of using essential oils for pets is to boost immunity. It has been found that oils such as frankincense can help to boost the immune system of dogs. This oil can also be used to relieve an upset stomach caused by stress.
  • Betters socialization:  Another one of the benefits of using essential oils for pets is to help your pet socialize. The soothing smell of chamomile oil can help your dog to socialize better especially if it is shy or fearful of new places. You can use this oil if you are taking your pet to a new doggy park or the first time.
  • Provides relief from respiratory issues:  If your dog suffers from seasonal allergies you can use essential oils to provide relief to them. Essential oils, especially peppermint oil with its fresh minty smell, can help to promote respiratory health. However, this oil should only be used via a diffuser and not by itself in an undiluted form.
  • Helps to prevents tick and fleas:  Using a spray made by diluting essential oils such as cedarwood oil or lemongrass oil can help to prevent ticks and fleas.
  • Insect repellent:  Essential oils such as citronella oil can be used as an insect repellent. You can use a good quality oil in a diffuser at home or store-bought candles infused with citronella oil to keep insects away. Using a shampoo or soap with this essential oil on your dog, especially during the summer, can help keep insects, ticks and fleas away from your pet.
  • Prevents overheating:  If you enjoy hiking with your pet, you can add a few drops of peppermint oil to its drinking water to promote internal cooling.

Even though there are benefits of using essential oils for pets, these oils should only be used after consulting your vet. If not used correctly or in the proper dosage, they can have adverse effects such as organ failure.
